FOSTORIA - City and school officials hope to win approval next month for up to $250,000 in federal funds that would allow two police officers to be stationed in city school buildings.

Fostoria City Council gave a first reading Tuesday night to an ordinance authorizing Mayor John Davoli to apply for the Community Oriented Policing in Schools grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The two officers would spend 75 percent of their time on patrol for the school district, with a focus on the junior high and high school buildings.

The mayor also announced at the meeting that he plans to meet with an official from the Ohio Department of Development to discuss the possible closure of railroad crossings in Fostoria. Mr. Davoli said the agency could provide up to $150,000 per crossing, funds that could be used toward the city's share of matching grants for the construction of three overpasses that will be built over the next three years in Fostoria.
