Maumee council delays vote on subdivision plan

After hearing objections from several residents and an emotional plea from developers, Maumee City Council delayed voting on plans for the Riverside Commons subdivision earlier this week.

The subdivision, which has been proposed for 2500 River Road by CSB Investors, LLC, has been in the works for several years.

The Maumee Municipal Planning Commission last month approved the newest plan for the development, which calls for demolition of the former Children Services orphanage buildings.

Residents spoke in favor of preserving the buildings, while City Council members voiced concerns about the development's infrastructure and requested specific plans for a memorial to the former orphanage.

"If you delay us tonight, we lose momentum," Maryann Sluhan, of CSB Investors, told council.

"Right now we're at a point where people want to buy," she said.

Councilman Todd Zimmerman responded, "The one thing I will never allow is for City Council to be rushed into something."

The council members scheduled further discussion on the issue for the June 7 council meeting.
