A Toledo man was in critical condition last night, a day after his van collided head-on with a TARTA bus in a construction area on Broadway.

Thomas Sumner, 35, of 2220 North Michigan St., who was pinned inside the wreckage for a time, was admitted to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center after the accident late Wednesday night.

The bus driver, Diana J. Frantz, 61, of Sylvania, was treated at the hospital, authorities said.

Police said Mr. Sumner was south on Broadway when he hit a construction barrier, crossed the centerline, and collided head-on with the northbound bus, which was carrying no passengers.

The accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
