Sept. 1 deadline set for gypsy moth treatment

7/29/2004

State residents with trees damaged by gypsy moths have until Sept. 1 to request that their property receive an aerial treatment next spring by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

The treatments would be applied in quarantined counties to reduce the gypsy moth's impact. To qualify, a treatment area must include at least 50 contiguous acres; be covered at least 50 percent by a tree canopy; consist of at least 35 percent tree species preferred by gypsy moths, and meet other requirements.

Under the program, the treatment costs would be split evenly between the state and landowners. This year, the cost of treating a 50-acre block has ranged from $900 to $2,200, the agriculture department said.
