Wood County rehires retired superintendent

7/31/2004

BOWLING GREEN - The board that governs the Wood County Educational Service Center voted 4-1 yesterday to re-employ Superintendent Douglas Garman following his retirement, which will be effective tomorrow.

Mr. Garman, who has a doctoral degree, has been with the agency for 27 years. He announced in late May that he planned to retire so he could begin collecting his public pension, but told the board he would be willing to return to work with a reduced salary.

The board approved a five-year contract that sets Mr. Garman's salary at $103,000 with provisions for 4 percent raises in each year of the contract. His previous salary was $108,000 a year. Mr. Garman also told the board he no longer would need medical benefits, which will save about $5,000 a year.

Board member Robert Nicholson cast the only dissenting vote. He did not give a reason.
