BLUFFTON

  • Bluffton University Opening Day Ceremony will mark the institution's change from Bluffton College to Bluffton University with the unveiling of new campus signs at 10 a.m. today at College and Lawn avenues.

    BOWLING GREEN

  • Bowling Green police are inviting the community to enjoy free hot dogs, snacks, pop, balloons, a DJ, door prizes, and children's activities from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Stone Shelter House at City Park. The "crime and drugs going-away party'' is planned in conjunction with National Night Out, intended to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for anti-crime efforts, and strengthen community partnerships with police.

    FINDLAY

  • The Riverside Summer Concert Series will feature Pantasia at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Allen P. Dudley Memorial Band Shell in Riverside Park. The weekly concerts are free.

    FREMONT

  • Randall Buchman, professor emeritus of history at Defiance College, will give the keynote speech, "And the Indians, too," at the annual Croghan Day celebration at 7 p.m. Saturday outside the Birchard Public Library. The yearly commemoration of Col. George Croghan's victory over a superior force of British and Indians at Fort Stephenson on Aug. 2, 1813, will include a performance by the Genoa American Legion band and a firing of "Old Betsy," a cannon used in the battle, by area historian Bob Gillmor.

    NORTHWOOD

  • An orientation session for people who want to take GED classes is from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Owens Community College work-force and community services division, 2249 Tracy Rd. Students must attend the orientation to register for classes. To sign up for the orientation, call Owens Community College.

  • Residents are invited to the Nature Conservancy's Kitty Todd Preserve, 10420 Old State Line Rd., for a Rarest of the Rare Species weekend. A native wildflower garden and walking trails will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Guided hikes will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The event is free.

    Native wildflowers and grasses will be on sale from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

    TOLEDO

  • Staff Sgt. Eric M. Tolson, a recruiter for the Air Force Reserve, will speak at the American Legion Toledo Post 335 weekly luncheon Friday at noon at the Toledo Club, Madison Avenue and 14th Street.

  • COSI Toledo, 1 Discovery Way, will host its Safety Days Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The event will focus on hands-on demonstration of different ways to guarantee children's and family safety.

    Festival Park, which is next to COSI along the Maumee River, will showcase such emergency vehicles as fire trucks, medical emergency vehicles, U.S. Navy equipment, and Toledo Edison line trucks.
