Low-income seniors eligible for free produce

8/2/2004

Distribution of coupons for low-income seniors to get free, locally grown produce from farmers markets in August starts today at many area senior centers.

Some senior centers, however, will not be distributing their Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons until tomorrow or Wednesday.

The coupons are available to people age 60 or older whose annual income is below $17,244 if they live alone or $23,107 for two people.

The coupons are available at 49 local senior centers in 10 northwest Ohio counties: Lucas, Wood, Fulton, Ottawa, Williams, Defiance, Paulding, Henry, Sandusky, and Erie.

Seniors can receive four coupons worth a total of $20 in August and the same amount in September and again in October. Coupons, which are given first-come, first-served, expire at the end of each month.
