Springfield Township to put 2.5-mill fire levy on ballot

8/3/2004

Springfield Township trustees last night voted to put a 2.5-mill replacement levy on the November ballot for fire department operations.

The levy would replace a 2.5-mill levy that expires at the end of this year. Fire Chief Ray Feeney told trustees that the levy first was passed in 1974 and has been renewed every five years, but it still generates the same amount of money as when it was originally approved by voters.

Bob Anderson, township administrator, said the $341,000 isn't sufficient to meet the current needs. If passed as a replacement levy it would generate income based on present real estate valuations and should generate nearly $1.5 million each year.

The chief said passage would add $65.23 to the tax bill of the owner of a $100,000 house.
