Houle defeats 11-time high-power rifle champion
8/17/2004The big news in high-power rifle competition at the National Matches at Camp Perry is that perennial champion David Tubb did not win the event this year, but rather finished second to rifleman Norman Houle, who took home his first overall high-power title.
Houle, of West Warwick, R.I., fired a 2381-105X out of a possible 2400 to outpoint nearly 600 shooters, including Tubb, an 11-time champion from Canadian, Texas, who fired 2375-116X as runner-up. The X-score refers to perfect center-shot bull s eye and is kept to break possible ties.
Third place went to Sherri Gallagher, a Prescott, Ariz., coed who fired 2370-97X and who was named woman and collegiate champion.
Long-range rifle championships and the Palma Individual Rifle Match continued through yesterday to conclude the six-week National Rifle and Pistol matches. A long-range firing school is being conducted through tomorrow to close out Camp Perry s national competition for 2004.
In earlier competition at the Matches, Kent Roach, of Toledo, won the Scott Trophy in one leg of the high-power competition, rapid-fire sitting.
Roach fired a perfect 200 with 15 X-shots out of a possible 20X with his .223 match rifle. It only took 20 years, he said of his achievement. He fired against some 600 competitors.

A drawing for special teal hunts at Magee Marsh State Wildlife Area is set for tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at the area check-station, behind the Sportsmen s Migratory Bird Center, 13229 West State Rt. 2, Oak Harbor.

The Maumee Valley Chapter, National Wild Turkey Federation, has scheduled a Women in the Outdoors activities day for Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at Adams Conservation Club, 240 South King Rd., Holland.
Females 14 and older can participate in four activities during the day, including archery, shotgun, handgun, GPS orientation, fly-tying, camping, kayaking, backpacking, basic auto skills, self-defense, plant identification, primitive cooking, rifle marksmanship, map and compass reading, wild turkey hunting, and waterfowl hunting.

It took a catch averaging better than three pounds a fish excellent for Lake Erie s western basin in August, awesome in most lakes elsewhere to win the recent annual captains walleye tournament for members of the West Sister Charter Boat Association.
The three top teams, by captain, with their seven-fish entry weights, include: Paul Pacholski, first, 21.66 pounds; Craig Adams, second, 21.48 pounds, and Mike Patterson, third, 21 pounds. Sixteen teams vied for the association s annual bragging rights in this casting-only event.

A total of 354 young anglers, aged 14 and under, competed in the 13th annual Kids Derby of the Northwestern Ohio Bass Masters, held Sunday at Mallard Lake at Oak Openings Preserve Metropark.

More white-faced hornet nests are being sought by Russell Lamp, who collects stinging insects for the pharmaceutical industry. Lamp said he will remove nests the size of a basketball or larger for free. Call him at 419-836-3710.
