Adrian wins state grant for testing at project site

ADRIAN - The city of Adrian has received a $100,000 grant from the state to run environmental tests on property where it hopes to construct a hotel and conference center, state Rep. Doug Spade (D., Adrian) announced yesterday.

The proposed center would be built in a two-block area bounded by West Maumee, Winter, and Church streets and College Avenue. A gas station and other businesses formerly operated at the site, necessitating environmental testing before any development can proceed, Mr. Spade said.

He said the city has been working on the project for several years, acquiring land in the area and examining various development ideas. Environmental testing was the next step in the procedure.

Mr. Spade helped secure the funding through the state's Brownfield Redevelopment Grant program, which has awarded $9.3 million in grants and $4.9 million in loans to 23 communities seeking environmental testing and clean-up funding.
