Turnpike plaza emptied after spill of a chemical

9/5/2004

The Erie Islands service plaza on the Ohio Turnpike between the Sandusky and Fremont interchanges was evacuated as a precaution shortly before 7 p.m. yesterday because of a chemical spill, authorities said.

A few gallons of a flammable gas, methyl acetylene propadiene mixture, leaked from the back of a trailer that was transporting it, according to the Berea post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

No one was hurt.

The Riley Township Fire Department and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency were investigating the spill.
