WEST MILLGROVE, Ohio - A Sylvania area man was killed in a freak accident last night in which the horse he was riding was struck by a pickup truck just south of State Rt. 199 and Bays Road.

The man, believed to be 27 years old, was one of three people riding horseback about a half hour after sunset when he was struck and killed, troopers at the Walbridge post of the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

His name was not available. Two of the horses also died.

The three riders reportedly were all heading southbound about 8 p.m. on Route 199, with two of them traveling on one side of the roadway and one of them on the other side.

Troopers said the Sylvania man was the lone rider in the northbound lane when he was struck by a northbound pickup truck. The impact threw him onto the southbound lane, where he was hit by a car.

The car also struck a horse, killing the animal after its rider had dismounted to aid in the crash, troopers said.

The rider and the driver of the car, both women, were treated at Fostoria Hospital. Their names were not available.
