Developer wants to alter project in Whitehouse

10/5/2004

A developer of a commercial project yesterday told the Whitehouse Planning Commission that he has been unable to attract businesses to the area and wants to turn more than half of the 55-acre site into housing developments.

Jack Laskey of JCT Enterprises, Ltd., yesterday proposed building 48 units in four-family villas and 76 single-family homes on part of the Whitehouse Square site, located along State Rt. 64.

Every member of the four-person planning commission said if they were asked to vote on the housing plan, they would turn down the request to rezone 32 1/2 acres from commercial to residential.

"We need commercial development in this town," Bob Sands, chair of the commission, said.

JCT Enterprises, which owns the land, proposed building Whitehouse Square about 18 months ago.

The development was originally slated to include a grocery store, bank, condominiums, restaurants, business offices, and shops.
