Swanton Village Council considers levy increase

10/12/2004

SWANTON - Village Council will explore the possibility of a 0.5-mill levy increase for the fire department to help offset a projected shortfall.

Last night, council's safety committee suggested the entire council look into whether the village should put the levy increase on the ballot, possibly sometime next year. The current 1.5-mill levy generates about $91,000 a year, Village Administrator Jon Gochenour said.

Village officials haven't finalized the fire department's budget for next year, but preliminary figures indicate a potential shortfall of about $24,000.

Council's committee of the whole will discuss the ballot issue when it meets in two weeks.
