11/8/2004

Two Blade journalists were recognized last weekend at the National Association of Black Journalists Salute to Excellence Awards in Washington for their coverage of last year's riots in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Clyde Hughes and Rachel Zinn won third place in the daily news coverage category for newspapers with a circulation of 150,000 and under for a series of stories about the riots after the death of a motorcyclist chased by police in June, 2003.

The organization's annual journalism awards competition judged over 300 entries nationwide this year in the categories of print, radio, television, and new media recognizing outstanding coverage of people of color and important issues in the African diaspora.

Clarence Page, of the Chicago Tribune whose syndicated column appears in The Blade, accepted the organization's Lifetime Achievement Award.
