Haz-mat unit called out for oxygen leak

TEMPERANCE - A liquid oxygen leak near a house at 360 Lavoy Rd. caused a brief scare last night, authorities said.

A neighbor called the Bedford Township Fire Department about 8 p.m. to report the leak. About four minutes later, the Toledo Fire Department's hazardous materials unit was dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival a few minutes later, firefighters found liquid oxygen leaking onto the ground from an apparently broken valve of a tank, which was about 20 feet long and six feet in diameter, Toledo Fire Battalion Chief Tony Gregory said.

Firefighters secured the area and turned the scene over to the owner of the tank. The owner, whose name was not available, called contractors, who were expected to fix the problem. No one was hurt, and no one was evacuated, Chief Gregory said.
