Most communities in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan will hold Halloween trick-or-treat hours on the traditional Oct 31.

More than a dozen communities, however, have opted for hours on Oct. 30. Officials in several of those communities contacted by The Blade said they wanted to avoid observing Halloween - also referred to as "devil's night" - on a Sunday.

Jennifer Kidder, Archbold's director of parks and recreation, said rather than have a conflict with church activities, the Fulton County village scheduled trick-or-treat night for Saturday. "A lot of area churches have Sunday-night activities," she said.

Delta police Chief Garry Chamberlin said his village routinely shifts trick-or-treat to Saturday when Halloween falls on a Sunday.

Bowling Green Mayor John Quinn said church activities were among his considerations when he originally set trick-or-treat for 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 30. He said his decision also took into consideration conflicts and safety concerns with night football games for Bowling Green High School on Oct. 29 and Bowling Green State University on Oct. 30.

But Saturday-afternoon hours for a Halloween observance came under heavy criticism from some Bowling Green residents, mostly parents of young children, so the mayor suggested that City Council consider changing the hours when it voted on the matter. It did so, setting the hours for 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31.

An early trick-or-treat opportunity is available on Wednesday for children in the Bowling Green area, when students in dorms and other campus housing will offer treats from 6 to 7 p.m.

Toledo and nearby suburbs generally seem to hold their observances on the traditional Halloween date. Lucas County commissioners, on recommendation of the county sheriff's office, generally set trick-or-treat hours for townships patrolled by sheriff's deputies.

Wide variations from an agreed upon date set in 1993 has created controversy in the Columbus area. The date is Oct. 30, but objections prompted a proposal that communities there get together and set one date and time.

The proposal would make it easier for youngsters, parents, and the communities to know when "beggar's night" is observed there. In addition, it would discourage the practice of some youths of collecting candy in their community one night and going to a neighboring community the next.

One thing every community in the Toledo area seems to agree on: Observing Halloween on a Friday night during high school football season is a no-no. Not one municipality in the area has reported trick-or-treat hours on Oct. 29.

Haskins, in Wood County, sets its Halloween hours on a Saturday near the traditional observance. "The village has always done trick-or-treating on a Saturday," clerk-treasurer Lisa Heft said. This year's Oct. 30 celebration will include a parade in the center of town shortly before trick-or-treating begins.

Below is a list of area trick-or-treat hours by community. Those not listed are asked to fax the date and time of their observance on municipal letterhead to The Blade, 419-724-6439, for inclusion when this list is published later this week and multiple times next week.
