New health facility holds open house in Defiance

10/25/2004

DEFIANCE Mercy Hospital of Defiance, a new medical facility, held an open house yesterday to give the community a preview before it opens for business Nov. 1.

The hospital is a joint venture of Mercy Health Partners in Toledo and Defiance Clinic. It will handle nonemergency inpatient and outpatient surgeries and medical cases. It will have 23 beds designed for surgical patients with expected stays of up to four days.

It will operate with a universal bed concept, which means patients stay in the same room throughout their stays, rather than transferring to different rooms as their needs change. Officials believe it will reduce the risk of errors, delays, and communication breakdowns.

Emergency cases will continue to go to Defiance Regional Medical Center, which has an emergency center and 61 private patient rooms.

It is owned by Mercy rival ProMedica Health System. The former Defiance Hospital merged with ProMedica in 1998; the $50 million medical center replaced it about two years ago.
