Putnam to begin work on adult education site

10/25/2004

OTTAWA, Ohio Putnam County officials begin construction today for a $3.4 million adult education center that also will house the county s Educational Service Center.

The U.S. Department of Commerce/Economic Development Administration awarded Putnam County $1.725 million to cover half the cost of the center, which will be built on Putnam Parkway in Ottawa across from the new Putnam County YMCA.

Ottawa became eligible for the funding after the departure of LG Philips Displays in December, 2002, and the loss of about 1,500 jobs.

Several area vocational schools and colleges have agreed to rent space at the center to offer classes, including Apollo Career Center, Defiance College, James A. Rhodes State College, Millstream Career & Technology Center, Owens Community College, the University of Findlay, and the University of Northwestern Ohio. There is no other postsecondary education site in Putnam County.
