St. V's foundation awards $713,703 to area charities

Eight charitable organizations will receive gifts totaling $713,703 from the St. Marguerite d'Youville Foundation of Toledo.

The groups and gifts are:

●Toledo Metropolitan Ministries, $165,000 over three years for its managed care advocacy program for the low to moderate-income elderly.

●Catholic Club of Toledo, $159,000 over three years to make sure children 18 months to 14 years old get transportation to the club for child care and after-school programs.

●Lutheran Social Services of Northwest Ohio, $120,000 over three years to provide prenatal education and medical referrals for uninsured pregnant monolingual Latino women.

Also, Latino women will be trained to become mentors in prenatal education.

●Little Sisters of the Poor, $104,000 over two years to support a senior center for the elderly poor who live at home. Indigent seniors will be driven to activities daily.

●Diabetes Youth Services, $75,000 over three years for continuing education and care planning programs to help school staff manage students with diabetes.

●Toledo Hearing and Speech Center, $54,000 over two years to support occupational therapy and sensory integration services for children of low-income families.

●Thomas M. Wernert Center, $19,103 for a leadership training program to help people in recovery from mental illness become leaders in their communities and be advocates for their own needs.

●Toledo Botanical Garden, $17,6000 for workshops to over 400 children and their families aimed at improving their health through gardening.

The St. Marguerite d'Youville Foundation has awarded nearly $7 million to Toledo area programs since 1997.

The foundation is named for the founder of the Grey Nuns, who established what is now St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center.

The foundation was founded after the transfer of St. Vincent to the Mercy Health System.
