Lorain, Ohio, resident dies as car strikes pole

A 32-year-old Lorain, Ohio, man lost control of the vehicle he was driving on Cherry Street and slammed into a utility pole, killing him, police said yesterday.

Sherman G. Swiger III was driving a Ford Focus northbound on Cherry, near Cumberland Place, about 2:25 a.m. at a high rate of speed. Police said he lost control of his car on wet pavement and spun off the left side of the road.

The vehicle hit the utility pole, knocking it down. Police said Mr. Swiger was pronounced dead at the scene.
