1/6/2005

Traffic fatalities in Lucas County dropped last year from 2003, and 10 of the deaths involved motorcycles, according to the Lucas County Traffic Safety/Safe Communities Program.

There were 27 fatalities in the county in 2004 compared to 33 traffic deaths the year before. Twenty-three of the deaths occurred in Toledo, and the other four were outside the city limits, said Gwen Neundorfer, program coordinator.

She said that, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, each fatality has a comprehensive cost of more than $3.3 million associated with it. Using that figure, the fatality cost for Lucas County last year was more than $90 million.
