Inmates clean up tons of trash in Wood County

1/12/2005

BOWLING GREEN - Inmates at the Wood County jail removed about 64,000 pounds of trash and recyclable material from county roads last year.

Sgt. Bill Frankart, who runs the litter collection program for the county sheriff's office, told the policy committee for the county's solid waste district yesterday 805 inmates worked 6,079 hours picking up trash along 1,010 miles of county roads.

Inmates also spent 1,236 hours helping out at the recycling center on North College Drive and worked 680 hours picking up trash during the Wood County fair and 157 hours doing the same job at area festivals.

Since 1991, the solid waste district has funded the litter control program, through which nonviolent offenders are allowed to shave time off their jail sentences by picking up litter.

Sergeant Frankart and another deputy supervise the workers.
