Delta: Non-profit plans to hire director

1/26/2005

An executive director is expected to be hired in the coming weeks to oversee operations at the Open Door of Delta, marking the first paid position for the nonprofit organization.

Applications for the position will be accepted through January, and chairman Dick Beehner said he'd like to see the post filled by Feb. 1. A three-member commitee will interview the applicants and report to the board of trustees.

Funding comes from a two-year grant of $35,000 per year from the Toledo Community Foundation. In addition to donations and grants, the Open Door's budget includes revenue from sales in the thrift store.

Open Door of Delta is based in a former grocery store at Palmwood and Monroe streets where volunteers have turned the building into a multi-use facility featuring a thrift shop, teen center, and office space for community service and outreach programs.

The executive director's responsibilities will include taking charge of fund-raising efforts; overseeing maintenance and upkeep of the facility, and handling day-to-day tasks such as making sure the trash is picked up, said treasurer Gary Baker.

The organization recently agreed to buy the building they are in for $177,500. They had been given free use of it for a year by the owners.

Delta Outreach, a community group that provides financial assistance to needy people, is getting up and running in the building. In addition to office space, there will be a food pantry for the outreach program.
