Survey: Building issue favored in Port Clinton

1/27/2005

PORT CLINTON - A telephone survey taken for the Port Clinton City Schools shows that 58 percent of the district's residents would support a bond issue to upgrade its aging school buildings, officials said.

The survey, conducted by Stanford Odesky and Associates, found nearly 31 percent opposed a hypothetical 4-mill tax increase to pay for school improvements and 11 percent were undecided. The survey found majority support for a plan to construct two elementary schools and turn a third, Bataan Elementary, into a newly renovated middle school.

The plan would reduce the number of schools in the district from six to four and replace Catawba, Portage, and Jefferson elementaries, plus the middle school. Catawba, Portage, and the middle school are all more than 80 years old.

The school board will meet at 7 a.m. Tuesday to discuss the district's facilities plan.
