Florida village voters to face 4-mill levy on May 3 ballot

2/10/2005

FLORIDA, Ohio - Voters in this western Henry County village will be asked on the May 3 ballot to raise their taxes to pay for village operating expenses, including emergency medical services.

Mayor Richard Rickenberg filed a request with the Henry County Board of Elections yesterday for a new 4-mill, five-year operating levy. It would collect almost $10,300 a year at a cost of almost $123 a year to the owner of a $100,000 owner-occupied home.

The village had a 4-mill levy that went off the books at the end of last year. Village leaders intended to ask voters to renew it in November but did not file their request with the board of elections by the deadline for the fall election.

That levy collected almost $5,900 last year at a cost of $68 to the owner of a $100,000 home. It was collecting at an effective rate of 2.2 mills.

Mayor Rickenberg said Village Council asked for more money because it expects to pick up some emergency medical services costs that Henry County commissioners previously covered.

Council voted 5-0 Monday to put the levy on the ballot. Councilman Kevin Schwiebert was absent.
