Springfield Township: Trustees hope to improve park

2/16/2005

Springfield Township has applied for a grant for funds to purchase play equipment for its newest park.

The 3-acre site in the Lincoln Green neighborhood between Shrewsbury Drive and U.S. 23-I-475 had been vacant with debris-clogged Harvest Ditch running along its southern edge until an effort began in 2003 to develop the site.

Lucas County sold the site to the township for $1 and the township contracted to have part of the ditch enclosed.

Bob Anderson, township administrator, said the property had been used as a park by the neighborhood residents, but there had been safety concerns because of the ditch.

The township is seeking a $30,000 state grant which will also be used for landscaping and for paving a short path to the playground which is in the middle of the park.

The county operated a sewage pumping station there, which was abandoned in the 1970s after gravity sewers were installed and the land was left untended.

Mr. Anderson said there is no deadline for when the township will be informed about the decision on their grant application.
