Oregon council OKs funds to move log cabin

To preserve its history, Oregon City Council last night approved allocating $15,000 from its tree-planting fund to relocate a log cabin to Pearson Metropark.

The Johlin cabin, built in 1867, is set to be moved in one piece this summer from its current home on Corduroy Road to a northeast corner of the park on land north of Starr Avenue that metroparks officials acquired in October, 2002.

The measure was passed by a 6-0 vote, with councilman Sharon Graffeo-Rudess absent.

"We're authorizing a one-time payment from city of Oregon for the sole purpose of moving the Johlin property," Mayor Marge Brown said. "That's our donation." The cabin was donated to the park by Woodville resident Fred Johlin, 77.

In other action, council extended contracts with two consultants to review changes in the design for a hazardous waste landfill expansion planned by Envirosafe Services of Ohio, Inc.

Last year, council agreed to pay $17,000 to Arcadis FPS Inc., a consulting and engineering firm, and $15,000 to Charles Moore, another consultant and an Ohio State University professor, to review the original expansion design submitted by Mannik & Smith Group of Maumee.

City officials last night approved paying each up to $15,000 more to review the modified design.Envirosafe wants to raise the height of the landfill cell south of York Street from 50 to 120 feet,
