5 island facilities receive EPA discharge permits

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio - Five facilities on South Bass Island that operate small wastewater treatment systems have been issued discharge permits by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

The agency said the permits, which the facilities were ordered to apply for last summer during an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness among island visitors, become effective April 1.

Ohio State University's Stone Laboratory, the Bird's Nest Resort, and the Fox's Den Campground were allowed to discharge up to 5,000 gallons a day each. Clinsters and Victory Park were allowed to discharge up to 1,500 gallons a day each.

All five discharge wastewater to Lake Erie because public sewers are not available to them.

The facilities are required to connect to public sewers within 30 days if sewers ever become available to them.
