Erie, Madison townships: Fire departments receive Homeland Security grants

3/9/2005

ERIE - Two local fire departments have been awarded more than $90,000 in federal grants to help offset the costs of extra safety equipment and gear.

Erie Township was awarded $40,806 from the Department of Homeland Security to pay for $26,700 in additional firefighting equipment, $16,640 in additional personal protective equipment, and a $2,000 wellness and fitness program for firefighters.

Meanwhile, firefighters in Lenawee County's Madison Township are set to receive $53,055 from the department to pay the lion's share of $58,950 in new firefighting equipment for that department.

The two grants, announced last week by Michigan Democratic Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, raise to nearly $885,000 the amount of Federal Assistance to Firefighters grants awarded to departments in Monroe, Lenawee, and Hillsdale counties over the last year.
