Ohio surprises Miami; Buffalo makes MAC final

CLEVELAND - Sonny Troutman scored 19 points and made three crucial 3-pointers in the second half as Ohio moved into the Mid-American Conference championship for the first time since 1994 with a 63-56 win over top-seeded Miami last night.

Mychal Green scored 15 points and freshman Leon Williams 12 - all in the first half - as the fourth-seeded Bobcats (20-10) moved within one win of an NCAA tournament berth.

OU plays Buffalo for the title.

Nathan Peavy scored 15 points and Danny Horace had 13 points with 11 rebounds for the Redhawks (19-10).

WESTERN MICHIGAN 68

CLEVELAND - Yassin Idbihi scored 17 points to lead Buffalo into the MAC championship for the first time with a win against the defending champ.

The Bulls (22-8) joined the conference in 1997 and haven't been to the NCAA tournament since becoming a Division I school in 1991.

CHICAGO - Illinois rebounded from its first loss of the season with a rout of Northwestern in theBig Ten quarterfinals.

James Augustine led three players in double figures with 15, and Deron Williams had eight assists and eight points, Luther Head had 14 points and Roger Powell Jr. added 11. Big Ten player of the year Dee Brown had five points and six assists.

Mohamed Hachad led the Wildcats (15-16) with a career-high 23 points.

Iowa 71, Michigan StATE 69

CHICAGO - Alan Anderson, a 90- percent free-throw shooter, missed a pair with less than seven seconds left and little-used backup Jack Brownlee came up with a huge rebound as the Hawkeyes (21-10) hung on to beat No. 13 Michigan State (22-6).

Michigan State was only 15-of-30 from the line, and had 14 turnovers.

OWENS 67, CLARK 47

PIQUA, Ohio - Larry Logan scored 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead Owens to a victory in the District 7 NJCAA regional tournament.

Cal Davis added 10 points for the Express, which takes a 26-5 record into today's 1 p.m. semifinal game against Cincinnati State, which defeated Columbus State 68-60 yesterday.

Owens held Clark State (8-23) to 31 percent shooting from the field (18 of 58) while connecting on 51 percent (30 of 59).
