Springfield Township: Grant to help work on 3 roads
3/23/2005Springfield Township has been awarded a grant of nearly $320,000 for road work this year on Pilliod Road, Mescher Drive and Estateland Court.
The work won't begin until after July 1, when arrangements for the grant are complete.
Improvements are estimated to cost about $650,000, with the township paying about $275,000 and the Lucas County Engineer's Office picking up the remaining $55,000.
Pilliod will be repaved from Holloway Road to Heritage Green. There are no plans for widening the road, nor will sidewalks be added, however, there will be a 5-foot berm added to the north side of Pilliod between the two streets.
Estateland will have its concrete surface removed and will have catch basins and storm sewers repaired. Mescher Drive will be repaved from Airport Highway to Garden Road.
The township will also undertake more than $200,000 in resurfacing Connecticut Boulevard, Rhode Island Road, and Manuel Street.
The majority of the work in that project will be done on Connecticut and Rhode Island, which will have a new arrangement of stop signs, and may include speed bumps.
When the project was first considered, neighbors in the area asked for different methods of traffic control because, they said, people were speeding through the area and new pavement was likely to increase the problem.
There is now a stop sign on Manuel at the intersection with Rhode Island. That sign will be moved to stop Rhode Island traffic at Manuel.
A stop sign for traffic on Longworth Street at the intersection of Connecticut will be changed to stop Connecticut traffic at Longworth.
Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Manuel will be repaved after pavement is repaired where it has failed.
