Sylvania: City schedules yard waste pick-up

3/30/2005

Sylvania crews will hold their first special green yard waste pick-up beginning the week of April 17 for residents on schedule A. Those on schedule B will have collections beginning the week of April 24.

Official green yard waste bags from the city will not be needed for the collection.

To be picked up, yard waste should be placed in a garbage can, with the top left off, a cardboard box, paper bag or other suitable container.

Branches should be cut to 4-foot lengths and bundled to a diameter of 18 to 24 inches, and tied with a string. No plastic bags can be accepted.

A meeting has been set for April 12 at 7 p.m. by the Sylvania Township Trustees to discuss an alternate barricade plan for Whispering Oak Drive.

Some residents have been pleased with the results from placing a barricade at King Road on westbound Whispering Oak, but others have complained that the changed traffic pattern has forced vehicles onto side streets.

A different placement for the barricade has been suggested by the Lucas County Engineer's office.

The date had been set for April 5, but has been changed, according to Dennis Boyle, chairman of the trustees.

Two informational meetings have been scheduled by the Citizens for the Sylvania Senior Center on issues involved in the levy issue for the center on the May 3 ballot.

The center is seeking a levy of 0.45 mills to replace the current levy of 0.32 which was passed by voters five years ago. If passed the measure will raise about $600,000 per year, up from the approximately $300,000 in revenue the center gets now.

The meetings, to be held at the senior center, 7140 Sylvania Ave., will be April 6 at 6:30 p.m. and April 7 at 10:30 a.m.
