Genoa ponders pay raise for new council members

4/5/2005

GENOA Genoa Village Council is considering raises for council members and most village employees.

Council is thinking of increasing each council member s salary from $3,000 a year to $5,400 annually in anticipation that the Ohio Public Employee Retirement System will raise minimum requirements for qualifying employees that have full-time pension status. It discussed the proposal at a meeting last night.

If passed, the salary increases would go into effect on Jan. 1 for the next round of elected officials serving on council. Four councilmen are up for re-election this year, Council President Elizabeth Slotnick said.

Council is also considering increasing the pay rates of about 15 village employees by 3 percent, as recommended by the finance committee. The police chief, village administrator, and fiscal officer along with recreational park employees and seasonal employees would be excluded from this raise because their salaries are considered separately, Ms. Slotnick said.

Both ordinances were given a first reading last night.
