Loma Linda-Ventura's still could 3-peat
4/13/2005Two bowling teams in the area's top male and female traveling leagues both had a shot at a "three-peat" this season.
But while the Loma Linda-Ventura's team still has a chance to win a third straight men's title, the Toledo Sports Center female team has been ousted from the postseason roll-offs.
Toledo Sports Center, the two-time defending champion of the Queens Traveling Classic, was knocked off in a semifinal roll-off Monday night.
The Lizcano's Pro Shop team defeated Sports Center 14 points to 7 at Westland Lanes. Lizcano anchor Jodi Woessner swept her opponent, Ann Lawson, in the semifinals.
Lizcano's advances to face A.A. Boos & Sons in the championship roll-off Monday at Eastern Freeway Lanes at 9 p.m. and Tuesday at Rossford Lanes at 9 p.m.
The first team to reach 21.5 points will win the Queens title.
Toledo Sports Center won the second session to reach the postseason. Lizcano's, which garnered the wild card this year to earn a berth in the playoffs, captured crowns in 2000 and 2002.
A.A. Boos & Sons won the first and third sessions of the 33-week regular season. The team last won titles in 1998 and 1999.
In the Men's Traveling Classic, the Loma Linda-Ventura's team is seeking its third consecutive crown.
Loma Linda's won two of the three 11-week sessions to earn a spot in the championship roll-offs.
The K.J. Excavating team captured the other session and will square off against wild-card winner Dunn Chevy-Buick in the semifinal roll-offs.
Dunn Chevy-Buick earned a spot in the postseason by having the best overall record among teams that did not win a session.
The semifinals start tomorrow night at 7:30 at Swanton Sports Center and continue Friday at Bay Center Recreation at 7:30.
Ten points are up for grabs in each game and the first team to earn 35.5 will advance to face Loma Linda-Ventura's in the finals. The championship roll-offs will start Thursday, April 21 at Southwyck and finish up Friday, April 22 at Interstate Lanes.
The trio of teams in the postseason have been the only teams in the 10-team league to win the title in the last seven years.

Two $500 scholarships are being offered to high school bowlers for the first time this year.
The Harry C. Fink Scholarship was established in honor of the long-time executive secretary and treasurer of the Greater Toledo Bowling Proprietors Association who passed away last September.
A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a male bowler and another $500 will be given to a female bowler. The only stipulation for application is that the bowler must be a member of the Young American Bowling Alliance.
The deadline for application is May 1. Applications are available at all local bowling centers.
The Greater Toledo Bowling Association Officers Appreciation Tournament will be held Sunday, April 24 at Swanton Sports Center at 11 a.m.
The doubles tournament is open to any league officer of a sanctioned GTBA league. Any combination of male or female bowlers is allowed.
