Sylvania Township: Barrier to be permanent

4/13/2005

A temporary barricade at the west end of Whispering Oak Drive in Sylvania Township will become a permanent barrier to westbound traffic, according to a decision last night by Sylvania Township trustees.

The barricade initially was placed at the end of Whispering Oak where it turns south onto King Road to reduce traffic.

Residents of Whispering Oak have praised the plan for cutting the number of vehicles using their street, but complaints have come from residents of Silica and San Luis Ray drives because traffic heading south to Brint Road have begun to use their streets.

Dennis Boyle, chairman of the trustees, said he favored making the barrier permanent because it solved the problem it was meant to solve.

He added that he is concerned about the streets the vehicles are now using as an alternative, and said trustees will address the issue.

Trustee Carol Contrada said she is interested in speed bumps as well as additional police patrols to cut down on speeding in the area until a broader solution is found.

Mr. Boyle said he hopes to meet with representatives of the city of Sylvania and of Northview High School and Lourdes College, which are near the area, to discuss long-term solutions for the neighborhood.
