Hayes Center will spray for gypsy moths in May

4/28/2005

FREMONT - For the second spring, the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center plans to spray its 25-acre grounds with a biological agent to protect trees from a gypsy moth infestation.

The center plans to have a low-flying plane spray the trees next month after gypsy moth larvae hatch and begin feeding. A similar aerial spraying of bacillus thuringiensis, a naturally occurring bacteria that is harmless to people, pets, and plants, was performed at the center in May, 2004. The agent coats tree leaves and reacts with stomach acid in the larvae to destroy the pests' stomach lining.

Monroe County memorial to honor Iraq war dead

MONROE - The Monroe County Board of Commissioners has approved installing a memorial plaque at the county courthouse commemorating residents killed in the Iraq war.

The bronze plaque, to hang next to similar markers for other wars, will cost about $1,900, said board Chairman Jerry Oley, who proposed the idea.

To date, two county residents have died in the war since the United States invaded Iraq in March, 2003, Mr. Oley said.
