CASTALIA, Ohio - A Vickery, Ohio, man was killed yesterday when a pickup truck tried to pass a car in rural Erie County, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Steven B. Hall, Jr., 21, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr. Hall was in the pickup truck which was eastbound on Mason Road near Maple Avenue about 3 p.m. when the driver tried to pass a car driven by Clyde R. Yost, 67, of Sandusky.

The truck went off the left side of the road, then returned to the roadway.

Drivers of both vehicles lost control as they traveled off the right side of the roadway and collided as they drove into a ditch, troopers at the patrol's Sandusky post said.

Troopers said they were unable to determine if Mr. Hall or Joseph Moffitt, 22, of Castalia, also in the truck, was driving.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt. Mr. Moffitt suffered minor cuts. Mr. Yost was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation.
