Delphos teen critically hurt when car hits train

DELPHOS, Ohio A Delphos boy was critically hurt yesterday when his car collided with a train at a crossing on Defiance Trail southeast of here, according to the Allen County Sheriff s Office.

Adam Newland, 17, was admitted to St. Rita s Medical Center, Lima, Ohio, in critical condition.

Young Newland was northbound on Defiance Trail about 7:30 a.m. when he failed to stop at the crossing and struck the westbound Chicago, Fort Wayne & Eastern Railroad train an engine and several cars carrying employees of the railroad.

Young Newland, a junior at Delphos Jefferson High School, was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from his vehicle, deputies said.

The railroad crossing is marked only with crossbucks.
