Genoa schools' treasurer wants to keep position and get pension

7/20/2005

GENOA - Genoa Area Local Schools Treasurer Mike Weis is hoping to retire and be rehired in the same job so he can collect a salary and his pension.

Mr. Weis, who has 31 years with the district, said the move would be "financially advantageous" for him and for the district.

He is paid about $93,000 a year as treasurer and transportation director. His new salary has not yet been negotiated, but probably will be at least $20,000 a year less than that, he said.

He expects his pension, from the state retirement fund, to be about $61,000.

No one attended the school board's second public hearing on the issue last night. The board could vote on it at its August meeting.

Also in August, the board will decide on the millage of an operating levy to go on the November ballot. It is considering levies of 3, 3.5, 3.9, or 4.5 mills.

In other business, the board approved a one-year contract with its teachers union that will save the district $8,000.

Salaries will be unchanged, but longevity pay will rise by $1,000, costing the district $47,000.

However, that cost will be more than offset by reductions in tuition reimbursement and perfect attendance bonuses, and by eliminating 30 extended days, adding a severance package plan, and consolidating the high school cross country coach positions.
