8/3/2005

LIMA, Ohio A restored Sherman tank that s normally on display at the Allen County Museum has been moved to Premcor s Lima Refinery for a tune-up.

Ron Rowland, maintenance supervisor at Premcor, said the tank s engine had several minor oil leaks. The repair work is expected to take about two weeks.

Acquired by the museum in 1957, the Sherman tank was restored to working condition in 1990 by employees at the former General Dynamics plant in Lima, which made the modern M1 Abrams tank.

Since then, volunteers from the tank plant, now called the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, and Premcor have kept the 1944 tank operational.

It is a regular in local parades and continues to be displayed inside the museum.
