Holland: First administrator would oversee daily operations
8/3/2005Holland officials recently decided to hire their first administrator to oversee the village's day-to-day affairs.
Councilman Noah Stone, who is chairman of the council's wage and hiring committee, said that he expects the village will run advertisements in local media outlets "in the near future" in search of qualified candidates.
"We now just have to advertise the position and interview candidates," said Mr. Stone, who noted that even though there is no set timetable, he "hopes and expects that the position will be filled by the start of next year."
Holland Mayor Mike Yunker proposed earlier this year that the village consider hiring an administrator.
He has said that while the village is served by its clerk and administrative workers, the government needs someone to watch over the operation as a whole.
Mr. Yunker - who is a detective with the Sylvania Police Department and active in amateur sports - spends hours each week handling village administrative business.
Council members also have administrative tasks, but they, too, work full-time jobs or have other commitments.
The council had not yet determined the salary because council members still have to review the village budget, Mr. Stone said. "We still haven't come up with a pay scale, but I would imagine the pay would be commensurate with the qualified applicant's experience," he said.
When the issue was discussed informally in January, Lee Irons, president of council, said council was prompted to consider hiring an administrator because of the many offices and programs that the village now has to oversee.
"The mayor's position is not a full-time job and yet it requires full-time commitments to overlook the daily administrative agenda," said Mr. Stone, who noted that the village has grown and that government requirements for grants and other administrative jobs have become more complicated.
