Community benefactors give funds to nonprofits
10/9/2005The board of trustees of the Toledo Community Foundation Inc. has awarded grants totaling $126,051 to four area nonprofit organizations.
In addition, the Stranahan Supporting Organization, a separate fund affiliated with the community foundation, awarded grants totaling $54,086 to nine nonprofit organizations.
Those funds include a grant to the American Red Cross to recruit and train disaster relief volunteers.
The community foundation grants were awarded to:
Cherry Street Mission, $66,000, to expand services at Sparrow's Nest, which provides emergency housing and supportive services for women in the Toledo area.
The Nature Conservancy, $40,000, to support restoration efforts of the wet prairie, oak savanna, and Karner blue butterfly habitat at the Kitty Todd Preserve in the Oak Openings region.
Toledo School for the Arts, $11,551, to support a special project integrating art into the study of world history.
Cambios, $8,500, to expand Project Reading to Eliminate All Discrimination, a volunteer program that uses children's literature as a means to promote cultural sensitivity and appreciation of
diversity.
The Stranahan Supporting Organization's awards include grants to:
The American Red Cross, $11,250. The Greater Toledo Area Chapter
has set a goal to recruit and train 500 volunteer workers, who will be sent to hurricane-devastated areas.
Beach House Family Shelter, $6,845, to replace kitchen equipment.
FOCUS, $8,500, for expenses related to lead paint abatement.
Martin Luther King Kitchen for the Poor, $5,991, for personnel expenses.
Open Door Ministry, $3,150 for kitchen renovations.
Schott
Foundation for Public Education, $2,000 for scholarships to Bowsher High School graduates, part of the Schott African-American male student program.
Collaborative Network, $8,500 for its beds-for-babies project.
Learning Club of Toledo, $5,000 to support after-school tutoring.
Toledo Seagate Food Bank, $2,850 for freezer repairs.
