Fund-raiser for quake victims set for tonight

10/19/2005

A local Pakistani-American physician who has started dozens of schools in Pakistan will hold a fund-raiser at 6:30 p.m. today at the Perrysburg Masonic Temple to benefit the earthquake-ravaged region.

Dr. Munir Ahmad, who just over a decade ago started the Dosti Foundation - a Toledo not-for-profit agency that builds schools in rural Pakistan - hopes to raise money that will go toward rebuilding schools and other necessities.

Dr. Ahmad said the destruction that his family has seen in Pakistan is hard to imagine. He said none of the Dosti Foundation schools was damaged in the quake, but he hopes to help replace schools that were destroyed in other areas.

The Dosti Foundation has built 45 schools, mostly in northwest Pakistan, serving about 5,000 students.
