Fostoria City Council raises its pay by 80%

10/20/2005

FOSTORIA Fostoria City Council has voted to raise members salaries by 80 percent as of Jan. 1, 2007.

Council unanimously approved the increase, from $3,000 to $5,400 a year, at a meeting Tuesday night. The three members of council s finance committee will continue to receive an additional $300 per year under the pay-raise ordinance.

Council members said they took the action because of pending state legislation that would change pay guidelines for the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System.

At their current pay level, Fostoria councilmen earn a full year s credit toward benefits from the Public Employees Retirement System, but the proposed change would reduce that to a half-year s credit without the pay raise.

Mayor John Davoli has questioned the timing of the pay raise, suggesting that council wait until to see whether the legislation passes the General Assembly.
