Maumee: City won't hire commissioner

10/19/2005

Maumee officials have decided not to hire a commissioner of community development.

The job, which entails being the point person for community events and working with the business community and on events that the city plays a part in but does not run, has been open since March, when the city's first commissioner, Kirk Kern, resigned.

The City Council's finance committee agreed with city officials that the position does not need to be filled at this time, although they may reconsider filling the position in a year, after seeing if the work can be done by others on staff.

Finance committee Chairman Todd Zimmerman said that if there are issues that need to be addressed over the next year or if there is too much work to be done, the city could advertise the position.

"Right now we'll see how we can do without it, but that's not to say that we won't fill it in the future," he said. He said the city may consider revising the community development position to take on different tasks.

Mr. Kern helped oversee several community projects, including $3 million in renovations to the Maumee Indoor Theatre.
