Trash bills in Swanton will increase

SWANTON - Because of higher fuel costs, residents in the village of Swanton will pay more for refuse service next year.

Council last night agreed to renew its refuse and recycling contract with Allied Waste Services for 2006.

The contract does not include a direct rate increase, but council approved the firm's request for a flat 5 percent fuel recovery fee to offset high diesel fuel costs, village officials said.

The fee will increase each customer's bill by 58 cents a month.

Allied Waste will expand its recycling service provided to the village to include cardboard, chip board (cereal boxes), and newspapers, said Jon Gochenour, village administrator.

Because Swanton subsidizes the trash bill of low-income residents, the addition of the fuel recovery fee would cost the village an additional $986 a year.
