MONROE Monroe County Community College will receive a $20,000 grant to replace trees lost to the emerald ash borer under a program funded by the U.S. Forest Service and administered by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

The grant, announced yesterday, is part of more than $500,000 in funding to 39 municipalities and organizations across Michigan. Also receiving funding for tree replacement is the city of Tecumseh in Lenawee County, which will receive $5,000, and the village of Maybee in Monroe County, which will receive $2,237.50.

Tim Bennett, vice president for business affairs and treasurer of MCCC, said the school has about 225 ash trees at its campuses in Monroe Charter and Bedford townships, which are infested with emerald ash borers. He said the college will begin replacing the trees in the spring.
