Lenawee roads to get $700,000 in repairs
10/29/2005Lenawee County officials are pleased the state has decided to spend nearly $700,000 upgrading state highways and bridges in their county this fall.
We re glad to have the repairs on the state highways so drivers don t take the back roads, said Orrin Gregg, managing director of the Lenawee County Road commission.
Mr. Gregg said that unlike other counties that do roadwork on state highways, the Lenawee County Road Commission does not.
In his view, it doesn t matter who does the work.
We have learned over the years that the public really doesn t care who s responsible for repairing the roads, he said. They just want to drive the best roads they can to get from point A to point B. The more money we can get, the better off we are since our [county] roads are not built to accommodate [heavy] traffic. We all serve the same driver.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Lenawee County projects, which total $687,500, include:
-- U.S. 223 bridge over the River Raisin in Blissfield. The project includes concrete patching, beam repairs, and expansion joint replacements. Traffic is being maintained with one lane in each direction. Work started Oct. 17 and is expected to be completed in mid-December. Cost: $274,485.
-- U.S. 223 near Onsted Highway in Rome Township. The project includes shoulder and drainage repairs. There will be shoulder closures only. Work started Oct. 24 and is expected to be completed in mid-November. Cost: $39,521.
-- U.S. 223 from Brooks Highway to U.S. 127. The project includes patching and shoulder repairs at various locations. Traffic will be maintained with flag control. Work is expected to start Monday and will be completed in mid-November. Cost: $126,860.
-- Repairs to five bridges in Lenawee County, including: M-50 over the River Raisin in Tecumseh; M-156 over Silver Creek in Morenci; U.S. 223 over the Norfolk Southern Railroad near Adrian; M-34 over the south branch of the River Raisin in Adrian; and U.S. 223 over the River Raisin in Palmyra.
Work on these bridges is expected to start Dec. 1 and continue until July, 2006.
The effects on traffic are expected to be minor, with no lane closures expected. Cost: $246,632.
