Joseph Newman of Toledo, a biology student at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pa., will take part in an award-winning leadership development program, "Catholic Hero's Journey," which is sponsored by the Salesian Center for Faith and Culture and developed by the Catholic Leadership Institute. Mr. Newman is a graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School.

Peggy Brown of Walnut Hill Farm in Maumee has been chosen as the 2005 Instructor of the Year by the American Riding Instructors Association. Her award was announced on Oct. 20 at the association's annual convention in Orlando, Fla.

Ms. Brown is certified to teach in six specialty areas and is also a Level IV riding instructor. She competes throughout the U.S. with her Haflinger mare, Ulie. She has also been an advisor for the Anthony Wayne Trailblazers 4-H Club for 30 years.

Tom Jones, water operator for the village of Genoa for the past eight years, was recently honored for 20 years of continuous service to the American Water Works Association. He was awarded the Wendell R. LaDue Citation. AWWA is an educational group that promotes better drinking water quality and supply.

Eric Pawlowski, 18, a member of Boy Scout Troop 43 of All Saints Catholic Church in Rossford, received his Eagle Scout rank at a ceremony held Oct. 1.

His Eagle project involved building ten raised flower beds that residents in wheelchairs could tend at the Luther Home of Mercy in Williston, Ohio.

Eric, a recent graduate of Central Catholic High School, is a student at Owens Community College. His scoutmaster is Keefe Snyder.
